Great HD on a budget, April 9, 2009

I was worried about having to convert the compressed files from the memory card into editable files for FCP. Using Voltaic, I was able to make the conversion easily. The camera is so light, you hardly know its in your hand. The deciding factor in chosing this camera is that it has a view finder – an important feature for close work. I love being able to shoot for long periods and not having to worry about changing tapes. It may not be the best (technically) HD camcorder out there, but for the price, it is great for most every situation.

Here’s the problem with this …, July 1, 2010

Having shot a lot of footage with this camera, I’ll just come right out and say up front that you really get what you pay for. In this instance, you’re getting an incredible image — as is — and amazing sound without having to use an external sound kit. This camera sets the bar high for image and sound and as a straight-forward point-and-shoot video camera for a consumer or even the everyday beginner who has the money to drop. But several things kill this camera in its tracks and really drag it down potentially creating a lot of buyer’s remorse because of the high cost.

Here’s the problem:

1. This camera utilizes a USB cable/power pack/proprietary cable to connect the camera to the computer. Lose this proprietary cable — and good luck getting the images off your camera, especially as time passes. People often lose things and a cable is usually one of the first, especially when you have so many laying around that look similar. The connection of these cables to the camera is also a bit tricky and awkward to make happen. It seems like it was a good idea when they designed it, but it’s just not when using the camera.

2. The camera stores your footage on an SD card in a proprietary format so you can’t just drag your footage off and start editing. NO. You must use their HD Writer software to pull it off first, which then allows you to save or convert the files. It’s a drag on resources and also a waste of time. The risk of ‘generation loss’ with this method seems high.

3. After shooting for days and doing a lot of product close-ups, I was horrified to discover a very staccato and jerky zooming motion when utilizing the slowest pan out. What a shame.

4. The manual zoom lens that is advertised with this is a bit misleading as it’s not very good and only works, if you can call it that, on this particular lens and not on all other lenses attached. It’s a function of the lens and not the camera. Don’t be mislead.

5. The remote needs to have more function and control over the camera instead of the very basic remote that comes with this. The camera is very sensitive (being HD) and a minor amount of touching the buttons like zoom and record cause problems with your image even with image stabilization on.

6. The overall user function of this camera is poorly designed. Most of the buttons are awkwardly placed, especially the on/off/file button. Horrible for shooting on the fly and doing more than one thing at a time difficult.

7. A definite lack of built in features which would make this a better camera. Overall personal programming of this camera beyond the basics is absent.

8. On-the-fly file deletion of bad takes would be a plus, too. Having to switch back and forth from File Mode to Shooting Mode, which turns the camera off every time, is a real pain. Being able to delete false starts and bad takes should’ve been considered and addded as a feature to the shooting mode.

9. A lot of money for what you’re getting. Yes, the price has dropped on this, but even still, someone will pay that price somewhere.

I’m sure plenty of people will come out and say how wonderful this camera is, but when you start putting it through its paces, the camera starts to quickly fall short.

Overall, there’s not much to this camera beyond the image and the sound. You can get much better these days for much less. The price-point and the very limited features with this camera really drag down the star rating.

Review after two years of ownership., October 31, 2010

This is a fantastic lightweight camera. I don’t know the story behind current pricing but I paid 0 for my camera.

Pros: The camera makes high definition video and you can choose between 1920, 1080, or 720. Most video I take is at the highest resolution. The camera can take still images. You can choose between recording with the view finder or the LCD screen. The sound recording is incredible for little camera with no external mounted microphones. Choose between recording sound in front of you or in 5.1 surround sound. My discovery is that surround sound picks up too much background noise such as cheering parents at soccer games.

Cons: My photo graphs are at a lower resolution than I would like and it takes a long time for the camera to focus and set. The battery needs much more juice and I am currently shopping on Amazon for a new one. The camera has been used on the field during softball games where dust is an issue and now the automatic lens cap is sticking and I have been unable to fix it. Video management!!! Did I know what I was getting into? No. I have recorded hours of family vacations, softball, and soccer games. The purchase of this camera has led me to buying seven terrabytes of disk storage, a blue ray disk burner and different brands of DVD and Blue Ray media. My concern is long term storage of my newly recorded video. What to do? DVD’s don’t last and Blue Ray can be even less reliable over time. My goal is to not let my video disappear like the old Super 8 video from my youth and the VHS from recent history. How can I safely store video?

Video editing: Roxio was the most unstable program I have ever used. Period! Don’t buy it. I have had great success using Cyberlink Power Director Ultra 8. I no long have Panasonic’s video capture program installed. I believe Panasonic’s video capture program was called HD Writer. I could not figure it out and it seemed cubersome to use. Two thumbs down.

Bottom line is Yes this is a great camera.

Very Disappointed, October 31, 2007

I feel the same about this product as the previous reviewer.

I was so excited about this camcorder. I had been looking at the other Xacti models and was about to purchase the waterproof Xacti when I found out that this HD version was coming out in a few days. I ordered it immediately.

When it arrived I was very impressed with the size and feel. It is so small and compact, yet is very easy to hold and operate. Much easier than my large sony camcorder. It is a beautiful piece of technology. The screen is large and easy to view, the controls and buttons are well placed, and the overall build seems to be of high quality.

The first thing I did not like about the camcorder was how narrow the field of view was. Even when at the widest angle, most zoomed back position I felt very “zoomed-in” on the subject. I found myself having to walk farther and farther back to get all of the action in the video. This was frustrating, but I would forgive this issue if the images looked good.

I took several videos and still photos in various conditions – inside, outside, bright, dark, etc. – and then looked at the results. I was very disappointed in the quality of the videos. The stills were passable (although not nearly as good as from my Canon G9), but the videos were grainy, often out of focus, and overall of poor quality. For this price I expected more, especially of an HD camcorder.

I am returning the Xaxti today, and will either purchase a different, less expensive Xacti or will simply use the video capture of my Canon G9. If you purchase this, I highly suggest you do some tests in the first few days – and save all of the packaging materials just in case!

I decided to give the camera 2 stars due to the amazing size, beautiful design and ergonomics.

On a side note, why is it that people find positive reviews so much more helpful than negative reviews? This is a trend I have seen throughout Amazon.com. It seems like people only want to read good things about items they are interested in, but I think it’s much more important to hear from people who did not like the item – especially if they did a thorough test of the product and seem knowledgeable. Any ideas about this?

OK if you don’t mind Perma-Zoom, November 30, 2007

Prior reviewers had mentioned the field of view being too narrow, but I bought the HD700 anyway, thinking that the reviews were subjective and my mileage may vary.

I was optimistic that maybe the HD700 had been slammed by videophiles, and that it would be more than good enough for my needs, which largely involve taking family videos.

Out of the box, I recorded a few videos of my three year old bouncing around on the sofa. With the light of 3 sixty-watt bulbs 10 feet above the sofa, the video was grainy. I tried both the SHQ and the HQ modes for 720p, both were grainy. I tried the same modes with image stabilization turned off, both SHQ and HQ were just as grainy. Biggest thing I noticed was how far away from the sofa I had to stand in order to capture the entire sofa (which shouldn’t be too hard, since this is a 16:9 widescreen camcorder, right)?

Next, I did a little experiment. I set the HD700 up on a tripod a large distance from a wall, and measured the size of the camera’s field of view at widest zoom. To do this, I stuck removeable labels on the wall, staking out the corners of the camera’s image, and marked a center dot. The camera and center dot (on the wall) were the same height above the floor. The camera lens was 152 inches from the wall; at this distance, the rectangular field of view was 67.5 inches high and 119.5 inches wide. Trig-savvy readers can verify that the field of view is 25 by 43 degrees, with a solid angle of 1075 square degrees (0.327 steradians). A theoretically perfect fish-eye lens would view a full hemisphere, or 6.28 steradians. We do not expect the Xacti HD700 to see like a fish-eye lens, but it does only see 1/19th of a hemisphere. That’s pretty narrow.

I believe this would be a great videocamera if you are shooting small things far away from you, and in bright light. For example, birdwatching on a sunny day. But, if you want to shoot something large, like a 40-foot bus, you will need to stand at least 50 feet away! My next phone call is for an RMA number so I can send the HD700 back. Sorry, Sanyo, I wanted it to work, I really did. Maybe I will try the HD1000.

By the way, the HD700′s shoe uses a full-size HDMI connector. If you are buying an HDMI cable to watch your HD700 on your HDTV, buy an HDMI cable with normal-sized ends. There is no way to hook up the HDMI cable directly to the camera itself, the HDMI cable is connected via the shoe only.

“Is that a camera in your pocket…?”, December 5, 2007

First, a major problem with a lot of reviews is that people with unknown skills buy things with unreasonable expectations and post authoritative sounding reviews. Most don’t seem to even look at the manuals, they just try using the equipment at their own intuitive level and then post bad reviews and take advantage of the return policy. I have a good friend that does this.

The people that read the manuals and actually learn to use things and are too busy enjoying them to bother coming back to post. So, we see bad reviews and think that some really cool things are junk.

Personally, I’m no novice. I own three video cameras and a number of digital still cameras that I know and use well, yet I am constantly missing good to even great shots/videos as I don’t have a camera with me. I tried, but just got tired of “lugging” them around unless I had a specific purpose in mind. What I wanted was a pocket camera that I’d have with me whether I planned to shoot or not.

I wasn’t sure what I wanted so I stared with pocket still cameras that also shot video and, after playing with a few, decided I’d be happier with a pocket video that shot stills. I did a lot of research online looking at web sites with actual still and video samples. Saw some very nice stuff from a Sanyo CG65, CA65 the HD700. The HD700 seemed to suit my needs so I looked at Sanyo’s web site and read all the specs, etc. Sanyo seems to have several web site, but one Japan based one, (sanyo-dsc dot com — click on English on the top) has a “Let’s shoot more Movies” which shows some things I didn’t know the camera could do and even tells you how to do them. Searched some more and found several user reviews of the HD700 with sample videos and stills that convinced me to try the camera so I ordered from Amazon, in brown.

Camera arrived and I immediately loved the feel of it. It slid into my pocket!!! I read the manual while I charged the battery and ran out to play with it in auto mode. Wow! The still pictures were quite sharp, a bit too sharp for me so I set it to Soft which I really like. The video quality was quite nice. I couldn’t get over the fact that I could just pull the camera from my pocket and get that kind of quality! I made a print from one of the still pictures and it looked VERY good. Showed it to a friend who has since ordered a HD700 (red) for himself and he wasn’t even in the market for a new camera.

I went out the next day and shot all day with it; indoors and outdoors. I shot in a few stores — garden departments are great for color and close-up tests, at a park, shot some construction workers, etc. The results were much better than I expected. The only glitches I had were operator errors, new camera, I’m still at the fumbling stage.

I don’t shoot low light pictures and knew from the beginning this is not a low light camera, neither are any of my video cameras. Not a problem as I don’t tend to shoot in low light, but if I did and wanted to use this camera (or my others) I’d add light, a tripod (there’s a tripod mount on the bottom) or both. I did do some quick low light tests by bracing myself against a wall holding the camera with my elbows in and in a two-handed grip, also by setting the camera and my hand on something (shelf, shopping cart, table, etc.) to steady things during the longer exposures and the results were nice. I’d recommend a pocketable tabletop type tripod or one of the flexible ones you can also wrap around things to help get steady shots.

I, also, knew that the 38mm part of the 38-190mm (35mm equiv.) lens isn’t considered wide, however, it’s wider than I’d thought and works fine for me. Found a Phoenix Magnetic Mount 0.45x lens here on Amazon that works WELL with this camera giving you 17mm, now that’s wide! Search vimeo dot com for this camera and see the test videos.

My suggestions: Step one, download the PDF version of the manual (or use the printed one — I like PDFs as I can search them) and go through it. Most of the “problems” I’ve seen posted here and elsewhere are covered in the manual. Step two, check out the Sanyo HD700 tip site. Step three, play and experiment with it. Read up on how to do things (the shortcuts features is really cool) and take it with you and see what you and it can do. Step four, search for some Sanyo HD700 related forums and ask questions.

I LOVE this camera and its new home is in my pockets. Mission accomplished.

Caveat Emptor!, March 12, 2009

I made a grainy video of an apple core turning brown with mine … while on hold.

.

Don’t take my word for it, perform your own test.

1) call Sanyo customer support on speakerphone: 1-800-421-6382

2) eat an apple

3) soak the core in lemon juice which greatly slows oxidation (browning)

4) allow the core to turn brown (if the call is dumped redial)

.

Notes:

a) your phone should be plugged in as the battery will otherwise die

b) you should use streaming video to prevent multiple video segments when the sd card fills

c) there should be an analog clock in the background for full effect. This is why it is important to soak the apple core in lemon juice. Without it less time will elapse on the clock before the core turns brown making your extraordinary hold time video less extraordinary.

Kodak Zx1, June 20, 2009

I bought the Zx1 to take along on motorcyle trips. I installed a camera mount on my motorcyle for on the road video. Here are some of the good and bad points.

The good:

1.Easy to carry.

2.Uses AA batteries or AA rechargeable batteries.Easy to find.

3.Different choises of recording quality. VGA,HD30, or HD60. Will also

take still photos.

4.Uses a standerd SD or SD HC card. Cheap and easy to find in stores.

5.USB connection to the computer.

6.Videos I have taken are pretty good quality.

7.I can actually operate this thing while on the move on my motorcycle

without crashing. It is simple to operate.

8.Pretty rugged.

9.Fast bootup and quick to record time.

The Bad:

1.Eats batteries like a thirsty camel.Bring spares.

2.Video has no image stabilization. You need a steady hand or a tripod.

Bring Dramamine if you are watching video where the camera is moved

quickly.

3.Include SD cards and batteries in the final price for comparison with

other cameras.

4.Records in Quicktime. Yuk for us WMV users.

5.Operating symbols on the back are cryptic till you get used to them.

Don’t press the wrong (small) button like I did or you will delete

your videos.

6.Software is OK (it’s comes with the camera)but good editing and maybe

format converting software may be a consideration.

7.I was not real fond of the software being pre-loaded on the camera and

installing itself when the camera was hooked up to the computer.I would

prefer it came on a disk. This way I would have more control when new

operating systems came out.

Overall it is a fun camera to use. It is very portable and pretty durable.

HD60 videos were pretty clear. Good outdoor camera. Poor low light camera.

I think I would wait on buying one if I did it over. It reminds me of the first digital camers that needed a few generations to develope. Still, it is an impressive device for being so compact.

A best buy, May 19, 2009

For starters Amazon delivers on their promise of a 3-day delivery. This is a company you can count on.

The Zx1 is right on target. Right out of the box it does exactly what you would expect from a small pocket video camera – decent quality and simple operation. Even indoors the quality was acceptable – which is more than you can say about most cameras in this class.

This is clearly a second-generation pocket video camera – with improved controls and support for large capacity SD cards. The AA batteries are just what you need to make sure you will never run out. I was surprised to see that a charger was included.

My big concern about buying a Flash Drive HD camera was the issue of file format. This is a thorny issue with all HD video cameras. I could care lass about HD – I just wanted decent quality and the ability to edit video.

The plan is simple – archive the ‘HD’ content and keep it for future editing when software and hardware are readily available. And meanwhile

convert the files to AVI or another usable DVD formtat for immediate use.

The supplied ArcSoft program does primitive conversion of the 720p format to 640 DVD format – but in Quicktime – which Windows Media player version 9 still refuses to recognize in Windows XP ( I hate Vista)

There are many third party programs which do a better job of conversion – the one I use is AVS Video Converter 6. It took the raw MOV file from the SD card and converted it to AVI format with the 720 lines preserved and good sound quality. As with all such conversions it is slow but the quality is excellent. This is not a trivial conversion. Of course AVS will convert it to any of a dozen other formats – some with smaller file size – but none with higher quality.

Since this camera is so new, the Kodak web site has very limited documentation for the Zx1. They avoid entirely the issue of file formats and that is because it is a thorny issue. Along these lines I should mention that without loading any software, you can slip the SD card in your computer slot and you will get a MOV file. It comes up as a Quicktime file. My version of Quicktime played the movie O.K but there was no sound. I’m sure an update is available – but it may not be free.

Of course my Quicktime player did play the MOV file after it was converted by ArcSoft.

Hey for 0 – this is a great buy and it seems to be durable also.

GREAT CAMERA BUT, June 13, 2009

Got the camera for my mother to use when she babysits my daughter. The camera is very easy to use and comes with all the cables and rechargeble batteries.

The HD resolution is unreal, on the computer and TV (camera comes with HDMI cable). I just returned from a cruise and videos are great. The only problem I found was low light conditions. Using it inside can be a problem with limited light, otherwise the camera performs better than I expected.

Update: Since my review the Flip Mino has been greatly improved. It now works and plugs in perfectly to my Mac and has stereo sound. For it’s small size, that’s a good thing.

Now, on to the original review:

If I’m going to spend more than a hundred bucks on an item or somewhere around there, I do extensive research first to know I got the best bang-for-the-buck and, consequently, dodge any potential future buyer’s remorse.

I’ve realized that the time I spend doing my product comparisons is often time that others don’t have so I may as well share what I can.

I’ll start by saying that you’ll see my “Verified Amazon Purchase” on the Flip HD Ultra Camcorder review because, obviously, that’s the one I wound up buying and I’ll share with you why. But what I like in a camcorder may not suit your own needs so I’ll break it down and let you decide what’s best for you via what I found out:

Though that may sound crazy for a Texan, we use the camera non-stop on vacations and even when we aren’t IN the water, we are around the water…on boats, in the sand with sea mist, etc. Then we can dive in and record the fish. Comes preloaded with flipshare…

That’s What Made It Even More Impressive, October 22, 2009

This Flip MinoHD camcorder is amazing– the ideal thing for any family hoping to videotape the kids, friends, events, etc. First of all, it’s completely idiot proof: when you get the box, there is absolutely no assembly required. Your first guess about which buttons are the power switch, record button, and USB connector release will be correct; great intuitive design. The device looks and feels great (as other reviewers have mentioned) and easily fits in your hand comfortably for long periods of time (unlike my blackberry). It turns on and off instantly (unlike my home computer or cell phone) so you don’t have to wait long to start recording that precious, fleeting moment.

The screen is a bit larger than the previous Flip Mino, but that’s not a big deal. Image quality is better than ever, and not too shaky/bouncy. The USB connector is about the same– still very convenient, easy to connect, and you don’t have to go running to find any special USB connector cable (like my old digital camera). The audio is surprisingly good, picking up faint background sounds that I hadn’t even noticed at the time of recording and picking up simultaneous music and voices, near and far, with great quality. The 2-hour battery life is more than I ever use, so it’s great, but I figure people who are videotaping entire concerts or watching grass grow might complain. Honestly I haven’t made use of the HD resolution, but I’m sure that will be fantastic when I start making my own rainforest nature shows. In the meantime, the HD quality is better than anything I’ll ever need. By the way, I know other reviewers have said they can make the camcorder freeze up by zooming in or out during recording, but mine works fine even when I do that. (I purposely tried to freeze it, but couldn’t.)

I saved the best for last: the Flip Video software. That’s what made it even more impressive! It is ridiculously easy to setup, automatically starts when I plug in the camcorder, and makes it completely obvious how to download the videos, play back, freeze frames to make photos, and share. And it’s fast– not much waiting for videos to load up (like other video players). It’s all in an easy-to-use, well-organized (by video date) layout very similar to the iPod control panel (a common comparison, it seems). I wish all software was this easy to use.

I highly recommend this device– it’s a winner!

I’ve enjoyed every Flip since the first Mino and this 2nd Gen MinoHD exceeds all my expectations. It’s still easy-to-use and easy-to-share video; but, the package is slicker than ever. No fingerprints on the brushed metal front, the 2″ screen is shows detail in any light, and the controls are much more responsive than previous Minos and MinoHDs. The audio is so good, my son’s Reggae band won’t give it back.

PROS:

*2″ screen is big and clear

*Great HD video in normal to bright light

*Better sound than a personal voice recorder

*One thumb video shooting

*Easy uploads and edits – no format worries and YouTube friendly

*HDMI output directly to HD panels

*Brushed metal shrugs off fingerprints and nose prints (don’t ask)

*Storage pouch doubles as lens cleaner

*Lickable packaging

CONS:

*Low light shots are grainy (easily solved at price points ,000 higher)

*USB plug is a little tight

*The wrist strap was hard to mount because of the brushed metal-solved with a toothpick
