I previously owned a challenging drive based Sony Handycam. The camera died (out of warranty) so I searched for an additional. I thought i’d go for a lower price point this time all around because I would be employing this primarily to shoot casual movies of my daughters. This was around half the value of a Sony or Canon. I really should have stuck with Sony due to the fact boy did I get burned.

I was expecting a reduce good quality item but there are several issues working against this unit right here.

The largest issue with this camera is the movies do not end up encoded in the proper 16:9 widescreen ratio. This appears to be a dilemma with other reduce finish Samsung cameras (the MX-20 has the largest complaints about this on the web) and if I would have acknowledged this ahead of time I would have stayed clear. The camera records the video in 720×480. This is widescreen and appears fine on the camera. The minute you plug it in to your Tv or play the file on the laptop or computer you will notice the black bars on the side. The video is truly in three:two ratio!!! This is a bug in Samsungs encoding. Search for Samsung widescreen camcorder issue and you will find it. I found this unacceptable and false advertising (Samsung asserts widescreen and I was told personally it will “fill the display and will not have any black bars on a widescreen television” from a rep.)

If that wasn’t enough of a reason to send it back, there is the high quality of the actual camera. The buttons are really low cost. Every thing has a fragile/plastic feel. The LCD does not even swivel smoothly. You really have to press the record button difficult(and the power button) for it to function and it feels like you are going to break it. I knew this item was a decrease finish item but I still anticipated some semblance of quality from Samsung (I enjoy their TV’s and appliances). The lens of the camera has no cover as nicely.

The good quality of the video is low to decent. Very basic settings and function.

What did I like about it? Effectively the color of the camera itself is great and I like the angle/ergonomic notion of it is design. The timelapse option is a great concept but since I am sending this back soon after a few days, I did not even get a chance to try it.

I study a lot just before getting and unfortunately this camera is very new and not a lot of men and women are talking about it. Even if the widescreen problem doesn’t bother you i’d nonetheless suggest seeking into one more brand (Sony, Canon) who have far better build good quality. I am going back to Sony following I return this.
